What Makes A Great College Essay?
What Makes A Great College Essay? Keep in mind that every college is different and individual admission officers may be influenced by different factors. With that said, the Essay is dying a quick death. Most schools fall in the âjust donât careâ box at this point. Having at least one essay score is helpful in case a student decides to apply to a Required college, but it is unlikely to play a role at Optional colleges. My daughter is trying to get in as an out of state student to University of North Carolina and University of Michigan as her top 2 choices. OR should we send her 1450 SAT without a writing score? Despite the decline in colleges requiring an SAT or ACT essay, Compass still advises many of our students to make the essay a part of their testing plans. Skipping the essay can leave a student scrambling to fit in an additional test date should his or her college plans change. Some colleges requiring the essay will not superscore test dates without the essay. Just as important, itâs uncommon for an ACT or SAT essay to be a significant negative factor on an application. Still not convinced that your essays are important? Letâs look deeper into the four main reasons that colleges require essays as part of the application process to see why theyâre worth your time and attention. Some students cannot begin writing the body of the essay until they feel they have the perfect introduction. Be aware of the dangers of sinking too much time into the introduction. Some of that time can be more usefully channeled into planning and writing. Introductions and conclusions play a special role in the academic essay, and they frequently demand much of your attention as a writer. A good introduction should identify your topic, provide essential context, and indicate your particular focus in the essay. Most academic institutions require that all substantial facts, quotations, and other supporting material in an essay be referenced in a bibliography or works cited page at the end of the text. The academic essay tests the student's ability to present their thoughts in an organized way and is designed to test their intellectual capabilities. You canât make it in college if you canât write. At any point in time during your college education, youâll probably have one or more papers to write for your classes. Colleges would be irresponsible to offer you a place in their program if you do not have the basic skills needed to succeed. With a minimum amount of practice, most students can reach the 25thâ"75th percentile score ranges of even the most elite colleges in the country. In other words, there is more upside than downside when looking at an extended test day. of students who completed applications with Ivy Coach earned admission to their first college choice. In the college essay, you need to contextualize your examples for the reader. She scored a 33 on ACT with a 6 writing, which she took because Michigan said it was required. She clearly wasnât prepared for the writing section, so she just took it again and scored a bit lower on her composite but the same on the essay. Then we went to a college fair and spoke to a Michigan Admissions Officer who said Michigan has decided NOT to require writing. She wants to apply to both as Early Action, but doesnât have time to retake ACT without writing for that deadline. Do you think reporting her 33 ACT with the poor writing score will hurt her at UNC or Michigan, even though they say it is not required, and UNC says it is discouraged? A strong conclusion will provide a sense of closure to the essay while again placing your concepts in a somewhat wider context. It will also, in some instances, add a stimulus to further thought. Since no two essays are the same, no single formula will automatically generate an introduction and conclusion for you. But the following guidelines will help you to construct a suitable beginning and end for your essay. Your essays are necessarily a reflection of your mind, and the admissions officers want to know that you have the âsoft skillsâ to excel in their program. If you are writing a good complex essay, even your topic sentence will require more explanation than just one sentence. Longer essays may also contain an introductory page that defines words and phrases of the essay's topic.
