It is a modern retelling of Edmond Rostand`s 1897 verse play Cyrano de Bergerac. Deception is examined in Cyrano de Bergerac and Roxanne, that drives the action forward. From fake identities and hidden emotions to vicious and clever plans. The play, Cyrano de Bergerac and the movie, Roxanne have many similarities and differences. This involves the plot, characterization, setting, conflict, and irony. In both, Cyrano attempts to help Roxane and Christian fall in love with each other, because he feels this is the only way to tell Roxanne how he feels. Overall, beauty is not only seen in the outside but it can also be seen on the inside, and the beauty from within still shines the brightest. Lack of beauty of oneself lowers self esteem that creates a barrier between you and the one you love which then forms into an unrequited love. Love is considered a struggle between many characters in the play, one type of love that was explored is unrequited love.
